How the CRS Grid Changes With a Spouse
Under the 1,270-point CRS architecture, adding an accompanying spouse or common-law partner reduces the principal applicant's Core / Human Capital ceiling by 40 points (from 570 to 530) and reallocates those 40 points to Spouse Factors:
| Core Sub-Factor | Without Spouse Max | With Accompanying Spouse Max | Principal Applicant Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age (20–29 peak) | 110 pts | 100 pts | -10 pts |
| Highest Education (Doctoral peak) | 150 pts | 140 pts | -10 pts |
| Official Languages (1st + 2nd) | 160 pts (136 + 24) | 150 pts (128 + 22) | -10 pts |
| Labour Market Integration (in Core) | 150 pts (80 work + 70 high-wage) | 140 pts (70 work + 70 high-wage) | -10 pts |
| Core / Human Capital Subtotal | 570 pts | 530 pts (+ up to 40 Spouse pts) | Combined Max 570 pts |
Spouse Factors Points Breakdown
Spouse Education
Awards 2 pts for Secondary, 6 pts for 1-year diploma, 7 pts for 2-year diploma, 8 pts for Bachelor's, 9 pts for Two+ Credentials, and 10 pts for Master's/Ph.D. (requires ECA if outside Canada).
Spouse First Official Language
Evaluated per ability across Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking: CLB 5–6 awards 1 pt/skill (4 max), CLB 7–8 awards 3 pts/skill (12 max), and CLB 9+ awards 5 pts/skill (20 max).
Spouse Canadian Work Experience
Awards 5 pts for 1 year, 7 pts for 2 years, 8 pts for 3 years, 9 pts for 4 years, and 10 pts for 5+ years of eligible TEER 0–3 Canadian employment.
Who Should Be the Principal Applicant?
Because Skill Transferability (up to 100 points), French NCLC 7+ Additional Points (+25/+50), and Labour Market Integration (up to 140 points with spouse) are awarded only to the Principal Applicant, the partner with CLB 9+ language scores, higher education, or Canadian work experience almost always produces a higher household CRS score as Principal Applicant—even if the other partner is slightly younger.
Accompanying vs Non-Accompanying Spouse in CRS
Understand when IRCC uses the 570-point Without-Spouse grid versus the 530 + 40 With-Spouse grid:
If your spouse or common-law partner is already a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident, or if they are designated as non-accompanying on your Express Entry profile, IRCC automatically scores you on the 570-point Without-Spouse Core grid. If your foreign-national partner will immigrating with you, you are scored on the 530 Core + 40 Spouse grid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Core / Human Capital maximum 530 with a spouse instead of 570?
Under the 1,270-point CRS architecture, up to 40 points are reallocated from the principal applicant’s Core / Human Capital ceiling (570 -> 530) to the Spouse or Common-Law Partner Factors section (up to 40 points), keeping the total maximum CRS score identical at 1,270.
How are the 40 Spouse Factor points broken down?
An accompanying spouse or common-law partner can earn up to 10 points for Level of Education (with Canadian credential or ECA), up to 20 points for First Official Language proficiency (up to 5 points per skill at CLB 9+), and up to 10 points for Canadian Work Experience (5+ years).
What if my spouse is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident?
If your spouse or common-law partner is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, they do not need to immigrate through your application. IRCC evaluates your profile using the Without-Spouse (Single) grid (up to 570 Core points, 0 Spouse points).
Can my spouse and I swap who is the principal applicant?
Yes. If both partners meet the minimum eligibility criteria for at least one Express Entry program (CEC, FSW, or FST), you can calculate both configurations and submit your profile with whichever partner achieves the higher combined CRS score as the principal applicant.
Does my spouse’s foreign work experience or second official language add CRS points?
No. Under IRCC rules, an accompanying spouse only earns CRS points for their highest education credential (up to 10 pts), their first official language (up to 20 pts), and their Canadian work experience (up to 10 pts). Spouse foreign work and spouse second language award 0 CRS points.
