Our Calculation Methodology
Every calculation on CRS Calculator Canada is powered by a deterministic, version-controlled rule engine built directly from official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Ministerial Instructions.
Our Calculation Methodology
CRS Calculation Method
Our CRS Engine (ircc-crs-2026-v2, Version 2026.2, effective 2025-03-25, last verified 2026-11-04) evaluates Express Entry profiles on the official 1,200-point scale.
Both the Homepage Quick CRS Estimator and the Full CRS Calculator call the exact same underlying calculation engine. When only partial inputs are supplied (such as in the 5-field quick estimator), the engine explicitly separates confirmed factor points from missing details and states all calculation assumptions rather than fabricating a false final score.
CRS Point Categories
1. Core / Human Capital Factors (Maximum 500 points single / 460 points with an accompanying spouse): Evaluates Age, Highest Level of Education, First Official Language (across all 4 skills), Second Official Language, and Canadian Work Experience.
2. Spouse or Common-Law Partner Factors (Maximum 40 points): Evaluates an accompanying spouse’s Education (max 10), First Official Language (max 20), and Canadian Work Experience (max 10). If the spouse is not accompanying or is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the applicant is assessed on the 500-point Single grid.
3. Skill Transferability Factors (Maximum 100 points): Evaluates five combination matrices across Education, Foreign Work Experience, and Trade Certificates of Qualification (each group capped at 50 points, overall capped at 100 points).
4. Additional Points (Combined cap of 600 points with Labour Market Integration): Evaluates Provincial Nomination (+600), French NCLC 7+ proficiency (+25 or +50), Canadian post-secondary study (+15 or +30), and having an eligible 18+ citizen/PR sibling in Canada (+15).
5. Labour Market Integration (Non-additive comparison): Evaluates Path 1 (Qualifying Canadian Work Experience in eligible TEER 0–3 high-wage occupations at 1.3x, 1.5x, or 2.0x median wage) and Path 2 (Qualifying High-Wage Job Offer at 1.3x, 1.5x, or 2.0x median wage). Path 1 and Path 2 are never added together; only the higher eligible score is awarded.
Language Conversion Method
Our Language Conversion Engine (ircc-language-benchmarks-2026-v1, Version 2026.1, effective 2024-01-30, last verified 2026-11-04) converts raw test scores for IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada into official CLB or NCLC benchmarks.
Every language ability (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is converted independently using discrete official bracket lookups. We never average the four skills or use linear ratio approximations.
Express Entry Draw Data
Express Entry round summaries displayed on our platform are sourced directly from IRCC’s official Ministerial Instructions respecting invitations to apply for permanent residence. Each record retains its draw number, date, category, CRS cut-off score, invitations issued, tie-breaking timestamp, official source URL, and last verified date.
Official Sources
All rules and tables are cross-checked against primary Government of Canada publications:
• IRCC Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/check-score/crs-criteria.html
• IRCC Language Test Equivalency Charts (CLB & NCLC): https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/standard-requirements/language-requirements/test-equivalency-charts.html

Rule Updates
Each time IRCC amends the Ministerial Instructions, our team increments the rule version in rules.json and language-tables.json, records the effective date and verification date, runs automated unit tests covering boundary and official sample cases, and publishes an entry in our Website Changelog (/changelog/).
Calculation Limitations
While our engine faithfully models published IRCC scoring tables, an online calculator cannot verify the legal authenticity of Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs), NOC/TEER job duty alignment on reference letters, continuous full-time hours, or admissibility factors. Final CRS points and Invitation to Apply (ITA) eligibility are determined solely by IRCC’s official online system.
