CRS Skill Transferability Points Explained
Skill Transferability evaluates how your education, foreign work experience, and trade qualifications interact with official language proficiency and Canadian work experience—awarding up to 100 CRS points across five combination matrices.

What Is Skill Transferability?
Unlike Core Human Capital factors that score each attribute in isolation, Skill Transferability rewards compound human capital—such as pairing a graduate degree or 3+ years of foreign skilled work with CLB 9+ language proficiency or Canadian work experience.
The maximum Skill Transferability score is 100 points for both single and married applicants.
Education and Language Combinations
When all four of your First Official Language skills are at CLB 7 or higher, a Tier 1 post-secondary credential (1-year, 2-year, or Bachelor’s) earns 13 points, and a Tier 2 credential (Two or more credentials, Master’s, or Doctoral) earns 25 points.
When all four First Official Language skills reach CLB 9 or higher, Tier 1 earns 25 points and Tier 2 earns the full 50-point maximum.
Education and Work Experience
Pairing a Tier 1 post-secondary credential with 1 year of Canadian work experience awards 13 points (25 points with 2+ years). Pairing a Tier 2 credential with 1 year of Canadian work awards 25 points (50 points with 2+ years).
Important cap rule: Education + Language and Education + Canadian Work share a combined cap of 50 points.
Foreign Work Experience Combinations
1–2 years of skilled foreign work experience combined with CLB 7+ across all four skills awards 13 points (25 points at CLB 9+). 3+ years of skilled foreign work combined with CLB 7+ awards 25 points (50 points at CLB 9+).
Similarly, 1–2 years or 3+ years of foreign work combined with 1 year or 2+ years of Canadian work awards 13, 25, or 50 points. Both foreign work combinations share a combined cap of 50 points.
Maximum Applicable Points
A fifth combination—Certificate of Qualification in a skilled trade occupation issued by a Canadian province/territory/federal authority—awards 25 points with CLB 5+ in all four skills, or 50 points with CLB 7+ in all four skills. Across all three groups (Education, Foreign Work, Trade Certificate), the total is capped at 100 points.
Practical Calculation Example: Hitting the 100-Point Transferability Cap
Nadia has a Bachelor’s degree + a 1-year post-graduate diploma ("Two or more credentials" = Tier 2), 3 years of foreign work experience, and IELTS scores of 8.0 Listening, 7.5 Reading, 7.0 Writing, 7.0 Speaking (CLB 9 across all 4 skills).
Common Assessment Mistakes
- Adding 50 points for Education + Language AND another 50 points for Education + Canadian Work (the Education pair is strictly capped at 50 points).
- Assuming CLB 9 in three skills and CLB 8 in one skill qualifies for the CLB 9 transferability column.
- Counting unskilled (TEER 4/5) foreign jobs toward the Foreign Work Experience transferability matrix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Skill Transferability score stay at 50 when I added Canadian work experience?
If you already earned 50/50 in the Education pair (for example, Master’s degree + CLB 9 language) and have no foreign work experience, adding Canadian work experience increases your Core Human Capital score (+40/+35) but cannot push the Education Transferability pair above its 50-point ceiling.
Can Second Official Language scores trigger Skill Transferability?
IRCC evaluates Skill Transferability using your designated First Official Language. Always set your stronger language (where all four skills reach CLB 7+ or CLB 9+) as your First Official Language.
What is a Certificate of Qualification in a trade occupation?
It is an official trade certification issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal body after passing a certification exam or apprenticeship assessment in an eligible skilled trade.
