CRS Language Points Explained
Official language proficiency is the highest-leverage controllable factor in Express Entry: it awards up to 160 Core Human Capital points (136 First Language + 24 Second Language), drives up to 100 Skill Transferability points, and can unlock up to 50 Additional Points for French.

First Official Language
Every Express Entry candidate must designate either English or French as their First Official Language and submit valid test results less than two years old across all four abilities: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Each ability is scored independently—up to 34 points per skill for single applicants (136 total) or 32 points per skill with an accompanying spouse (128 total). Never average your four test scores; a single skill dropping from CLB 9 to CLB 8 reduces both Core points and Skill Transferability.
Second Official Language
If you take an approved test in your Second Official Language and score at least CLB/NCLC 5 in an ability, you earn 1 point per skill at CLB 5–6, 3 points per skill at CLB 7–8, and 6 points per skill at CLB 9 or above (up to 24 points single, or capped at 22 points with an accompanying spouse).
CLB and NCLC Levels
Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) measure English proficiency, while Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) measure French proficiency. IRCC converts raw exam scores from IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, and PTE Core into CLB levels, and TEF Canada or TCF Canada into NCLC levels.
Four Language Abilities
The biggest threshold in the CRS language grid occurs between CLB 8 and CLB 9. Moving a single skill from CLB 8 to CLB 9 adds 8 Core points (from 23 to 31 for single applicants). When all four skills reach CLB 9+, Skill Transferability combinations with post-secondary education and foreign work experience jump from 13/25 points to 25/50 points.
Language and Skill Transferability
Skill Transferability evaluates the lowest CLB/NCLC level among your four First Official Language abilities. If you score CLB 10 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, but CLB 8 in Writing, your profile is assessed at the "CLB 7 or more" transferability tier rather than the "CLB 9 or more" tier.
Language Conversion Tools
Use our dedicated official conversion tools below to translate raw IELTS General, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada test results into exact CLB/NCLC levels per skill.
Practical Calculation Example: The "CLB 9 Magic Threshold" (IELTS 8-7-7-7)
Priya (single, age 27, Master’s degree, 3 years foreign work experience) scores IELTS General Listening 7.5 (CLB 8), Reading 7.0 (CLB 9), Writing 7.0 (CLB 9), Speaking 7.0 (CLB 9). Because Listening is CLB 8, her minimum skill is CLB 8.
Common Assessment Mistakes
- Using an overall IELTS band score (e.g. Overall 7.5) instead of converting Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking individually.
- Taking IELTS Academic or PTE Academic instead of IELTS General Training or PTE Core.
- Forgetting that IELTS Listening requires 8.0 (not 7.0) to reach CLB 9.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which language tests are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry?
IRCC accepts three English tests (CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, and PTE Core) and two French tests (TEF Canada and TCF Canada).
How long are language test results valid for CRS points?
Official language test results are valid for exactly two years from the date of the test result. They must be valid both when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
Should I choose English or French as my First Official Language?
You should designate whichever official language gives you the higher CLB/NCLC levels across all four skills as your First Official Language, and list the other as your Second Official Language. You still qualify for the +25/+50 French Additional Points regardless of whether French is listed first or second, provided you score NCLC 7+ in all four French abilities.
